PLANS to vaccinate healthy children against swine flu have failed to win widespread backing from Welsh parents.
As the country's death toll rose by seven, to a total of 21, health chiefs announced vaccinations of children aged between six months and five years could begin within weeks.
They said official figures showed one to four-year-olds have been hardest hit by the virus, but parents who spoke to the Western Mail last night were split on whether they would be vaccinating their children.

THE first European cases of a strain of swine flu which cannot be treated with the drug Tamiflu have been diagnosed in Wales.
The five patients at the University Hospital of Wales, in Cardiff, could also be the first confirmed cases of person-to- person transmission of Tamiflu-resistant swine flu in the world.
Two of the patients have been treated and discharged, one is in critical care and the remaining two are on a ward receiving treatment.

Oregonians worried about whether they or a family member have H1N1 now can easily get in touch with a nurse to talk over their symptoms.
The state on Friday unveiled its public health flu hot line — 800-978-3040 — with nurses on hand to discuss basic issues such as concerns about flu exposure, taking care of others and when to see a doctor.

The GHA has yesterday confirmed that there is now an established outbreak of Swine Flu in Gibraltar.
Sixty-two cases have been confirmed to date and a further 51 are awaiting confirmation.
The GHA therefore estimates that Gibraltar now has over 100 cases of Swine Flu.

Dr. Samie Jaffrey, associate professor of pharmacology at Weill Cornell Medical College, is among the first researchers to win a prestigious NIH Director's Transformative R01 award from the National Institutes of Health.
Dr. Jaffrey and his colleagues are developing innovative protein recognition technologies that may some day speed up lab testing by instantaneously measuring proteins within biological samples.
Protein detection is essential for diagnosing illnesses, detecting environmental toxins, and for most types of biomedical research.

The Portland State Vikings, Big Sky regular-season champions, hit the 20-win mark for the fifth year in a row with a four-set victory Friday night at Sacramento State.
The Vikings finished 14-2 in conference play, matching the 2006 team for the best Big Sky mark in school history.
